KARLEE MACKIE - MLAK

MLAK – Contemporary Australian Artist & Former Pro Surfer Turning Waves Into Canvases

MLAK (Karlee Mackie) is a Byron Bay-based contemporary artist known for her bold, symbolic, and deeply expressive artworks that blur the lines between storytelling, street culture, and fine art. A pioneer in more ways than one, she made history as Australia’s first professional female free surfer — now carving a new path in the art world.

Her creative journey began early. From painting as a child to customizing surfboards on the global surfing circuit, MLAK’s life has always been grounded in visual expression. Her intuitive and organic approach to painting explores space, colour, aA defining moment in MLAK’s artistic awakening came during a trip to New York City, where she surfed Rockaway Beach with acclaimed artist Julian Schnabel and his circle after being introduced to the film Basquiat. That encounter ignited a lifelong desire to merge art, culture, and storytelling — and confirmed her belief that art can be a life path, not just a passion.

Today, MLAK is represented by Thom Gallery, Alchemy, and ALOW Gallery, where her works continue to connect with audiences through their raw energy and emotional depth. She is also exploring digital art and NFTs, pushing the boundaries of how and where her work lives in the world.

Infused with symbolism, surrealism, and a cheeky sense of play, MLAK’s art invites viewers to feel, question, and connect. Whether on a surfboard, canvas, or screen, she is committed to creating work that brings colour, courage, and creativity to the forefront.
